Ways to Reduce Age Spots

Age spots are excess pigmentation in the skin. They are caused due to excessive exposure to sunlight that causes this pigmentation in certain areas of the face.

These areas seem to have spots when they are seen in contrast with the rest of the skin. If sunlight is the cause, then the obvious way to avoid age spots is to stay away from sunlight as much as possible.

If such spots already exist, there are many ways to treat them. One of the most logical and convenient methods is exfoliation of the skin. This is the process of the removal of the dead cells of the skin and thus when the procedure is carried out on the face,

the dead skin cells that form the age spots also are extracted, thereby making it less prominent. New cells with normal pigmentation start to take place of the old removed ones and the spot starts to fade away.

One of the best ways to exfoliate your skin is by using lemons. The acidic content in these lemons helps peel off the affected skin and the best results are seen if this is done twice daily for at least 2 weeks. There are also certain creams that have been designated the same job as exfoliation.

These creams contain bleaching agents to lighten the spots. However it has been noticed that these creams work best with light skin. If you have a darker skin tone, then these creams just might render the age spots darker and more prominent. Therefore try and avoid such creams and opt for the natural ways of reducing these age spots for darker skin tones.

There are some components called the Retinoids which are rich in Vitamin A. Vitamin A is necessary in the growth and the development of the skin cells. It sparks growth and in the process, the age spots start to fade.

These have a side effect though as they tend to make the skin dry and flaky. Therefore you have to make sure that the skin is hydrated when you use creams with Retinoids and also go slow in the beginning to see how your skin reacts to it. Drink plenty of water and use a lot of moisturizer too. Whenever you go out, do not forget to apply sunscreen.
