Leg cramps usually become a prominent cause of concern during the final months of pregnancy. This condition is characterized by the development of a throbbing pain in the region of the lower legs and upper thighs. The increase in body weight of the pregnant woman, the rise in the blood volume and the increased pressure exerted by the uterus on the nerves in the leg region, can all contribute towards the development of leg cramps.

Stretch Your Legs

It is seen that by performing exercises that will stimulate the flow of blood in the leg region, one can prevent the formation of leg cramps. For this purpose, you can practice leg stretches, a few times daily before bedtime. Do lie down on your bed and stretch your legs by pulling your toes in an upward position towards the knee, while pushing your heels away from you.

This exercise will help in keeping your leg muscles in a relaxed state, thereby alleviating the problem of leg cramps. You can also wiggle your toes and rotate your ankles, so as to promote circulation in the leg region. Also, walking around for 10 to 15 minutes every day, will help to relax the leg muscles and prevent the formation of pregnancy leg cramps.

Take Care Of Your Posture

To prevent the occurrence of pregnancy leg cramps, it is necessary that you take utmost care of your posture. Do avoid standing in the same position for long periods of time. Also, do not sit with your legs in a crossed position, as it will hinder the blood flow in the leg region, thereby leading to the development of leg cramps. Sitting down by keeping your legs elevated up to the level of your hips, is a recommended posture to avoid the formation of cramps.

Stay Hydrated

Studies have shown that the lack of water in the body can lead to the development of leg cramps.  Dehydration causes the tightening of the body muscles, thereby leading to the development of muscle cramps. Therefore, to avoid such an occurrence it is recommended that you stay completely hydrated and drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

It is seen that following an improper diet can lead to the formation of leg cramps during pregnancy. In order to prevent such a situation, it is necessary that you follow a well-balanced pregnancy diet.

Since potassium is required for the bringing about healthy muscle contraction, it is recommended that you have plenty of potassium rich foods like bananas. Also, do boost the calcium levels in the body by consuming  milk products, leafy green vegetables and fishes like salmon.

At the same time, reduce the intake of phosphorus rich foods like processed meat and junk foods, as they are seen to contribute to the formation of pregnancy leg cramps. Thus by following the above said methods, you will very well be able to prevent the occurrence of leg cramps during pregnancy.
