The Treatment For Acne Scars

January 14, 2009

Almost 99% of people, most of whom are young adults and teenagers, have suffered from acne in their lives. If acne lasts for some months to a few years, treatments that use laser photo therapy, skin filler substances and conventional surgery should be used to prevent pigmentation and scars.

Classification of types of scarring. Acne scars can be of three types:

1. Ice-pick: the diameter of these scars measure 1-2 mm.

2. Rolling: abnormal fibrous bands give rise to rolling scars that are 4 to 5 mm in width.

3. Boxcar scars: the diameter of these scars is over 3 mm; these scars resemble those that appear after chicken pox.

You need to determine the type of acne scars at first to select the treatment that’s best suited to heal it. Treatment options After your physician has examined your skin, talk and discuss about the options of available treatment. Treatments consist of laser skin resurfacing, subcision surgery and the use of fillers like Artecoll® or Restylane.

Subcision is mostly used to treat rolling scars where the fibrous bands present at a depth in the skin layers are cut after local anesthesia is given.

To treat shallow boxcar scars, punch grafting or subcision and laser skin resurfacing can be used. Usually, a blend of punch excision and punch elevation are used to treat deep boxcar scars. After anesthesia, the scar is removed with the help of a punch-biopsy surgical instrument.

Most cases require punch elevation or punch grafting for the best results. In punch elevation, the tissue and not the scar is lifted. After sometime, this tissue slowly merges with the skin’s level. Skin resurfacing can also be done using laser techniques or chemical peels.

Laser skin resurfacing

A part of the skin’s epidermal and dermal layer is removed by laser skin resurfacing technique. However, only experienced physicians should carry out this process.

Combination treatments

Along with resurfacing therapies, combination treatments that use the surgical techniques mentioned above are utilized often. You should not go for any laser or surgical treatment for at least 6 to 12 months in case you are using Accutane. If you don’t wait, your wounds may not heal and complications can occur.

These treatments improve the acne scars by 30% to 60%, which is considered to be a rational result. If you are planning to use these treatments for acne scars, keep in mind that it will take patience and time to see improvements.
