The Importance of Antioxidants in the Body

Antioxidants are compounds that are there in the food content that help in removing what are known as the free radicals, which are chemical components

that are the cause of the breakdown of individual cells resulting in reduced immunity, susceptibility to cancer and many ailments that the body might not be able to fight.

The anti oxidants are also responsible for prevention of wrinkles and cataracts even, because both of them occur due to the degeneration of cells.

The antioxidants’ major role is to reduce the free radical count and hence whatever body ailments are caused due to the free radicals, they do not occur at that rampant a scale with the reduced free radical count.

Studies have indicated that all the individuals who have had food content that is a good source of free radicals over a period of five years have had a 13% lower rate of cancer and those who have consumed diet that is high in Vitamins E, C and Beta Carotene, have shown the greatest improvement in the cardiac symptoms.

It must be pointed out that the Vitamin sources of E and C are also rich in the anti oxidant content. One should have fortified cereals, vegetable oils, spinach and kale, mangoes and wheat germs to have the required amount of anti oxidants.

Citrus fruits and leafy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are also a great source of antioxidants and they provide Vitamin E to the body as well.

Selenium is the element that is found in the tissues and is the mineral component that causes the skin to be healthier and helps maintain the muscle mass and tone.

This is one of those elements which are also responsible for the supply of antioxidants and help reduce the pace of aging by neutralizing the free radicals and hence reducing the pace of cell destruction. Onion, garlic, mushrooms, wheat germ and garlic are a great source of selenium.

The antioxidants in the body are not in abundant supply and this supply needs to be replenished constantly. This is achieved by a healthy nutritional diet which also supports the antioxidants performance in the body.
