Sexual Health: Are You Too Stressed To Want Sex?

If you are too stressed out to have sex, you aren’t alone. Lovemaking has become the latest casualty of our 24/7 culture, and the TINS (two incomes, no sex) syndrome is now a common phenomenon among couples.

Almost all young to middle-aged adults say their sex-lives are suffering because both partners work such long hours: they are simply too tired and stressed to feel like making love at the end of the day.

Hormonal downturn

Tiredness is an anti-aphrodisiac in its own right, but stress hormones also hit sexually hard. Higher-than-usual levels of substances like adrenaline, noradrenalin, cortisol and prolactin (which triggers the making of breast milk in lactating mothers but is also produced when having sex) interfere with the production of sex hormones-testosterone for men, and estrogen and small amounts of testosterone for women – because it’s the same gland, the pineal, that makes them.

Stress also decreases the production of another hormone called dehydroepiandosterone (DHEA),  which has a role in regulating sex hormones and appears to slow many of the signs of aging. So if you want your libido back, it helps – in addition to looking at sexuality-stimulating substances – to spend a bit less time working and address those elevated stress-hormone levels.

One way to do so – apart from cutting back working hours and taking up an exercise, yoga, relaxation or meditation program – is with the non-sedative anti-anxiety plant extracts, phellodendron amurense and magnolia officinalis, which are available in a herbal combination called Relora.

Try it with a libido-boosting supplement such as Libilov (for men) or the Peruvian herb maca for women. If you don’t want to spend money on pricey herbal aphrodisiacs: taking extra vitamin C can triple the amount of sex you have. If you try this at home, it is worth knowing that 3 g vitamin C is a high dose and may cause temporary stomach upset or mild diarrhea.

You can only really absorb 500 mg at a time – the rest is peed out and lost. Once you relieve stress and take herbal remedies that help you to bring your sex drive to normal, your sex life will be rocking like before.
