Preventing Stretch Marks

All thanks to the advancements in the field of medicine, getting rid of stretch marks is the latest fad among thousands of woman who desire to do away with these spiteful marks.

If you want to avoid stretch marks from forming there are quite a few things that you need to be familiar with, first. Let’s find out some more information about stretch marks and the possible ways to get rid of them and to keep them at bay.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can occur due to several reasons, however the main thing is that the skin has remained overstretched for too long, as in case of pregnancy and obesity. This overstretching of the skin interferes with the production of collagen.

Collagen is the supportive protein structure that lends support to the skin tissues. And as this structure suffers damage, it leaves behind a scar. And these scars may not disappear even after the skin gets back to its normal shape that is after you have slimmed down or after childbirth. The size and permanency of the scar depend upon the kind of trauma suffered by your skin.

Irrespective of how healthy you are, you still have a 90% chance of developing stretch marks during pregnancy. And again if you’re gaining weight beyond control, you stand a 70% chance of developing stretch marks.

Prevention:

Pregnancy stretch marks are nearly unavoidable, however there are some over the counter topical treatments which need to be used all through the pregnancy to help increase the skin elasticity and thus minimize the formation of stretch marks. Also keeping the abdominal skin well lubricated and hydrated will also help in preventing stretch marks. And lastly, you must consume a lot of water during your pregnancy as this will help in keeping the skin hydrated from within.

As for obesity triggered stretch marks, the most important and the most obvious way to keep them at bay, is to avoid gaining too much of weight. And when you are trying to loose weight, go the natural way, which means you should stick to healthy eating and regular exercising instead of trying some quick weight loss gimmick like weight loss pills. Loosing weight naturally and gradually will minimize the formation of stretch marks.

Apart from these preventive measures, you need to watch out for your vitamin C and omega3 fatty acid consumption, as both of these are vital to the formation of collagen under the skin.
