The snow has melted and spring is about to arrive. It’s time to pack away your winter clothes and organize your closet to get out your clothes for the warm season.

However, you should be careful while stuffing away your sweaters, thermals, hats, coats, etc so that they can be used for the next winter season.

Here are some tips to safely put away your winter clothing and avoid any damage to the clothes.Clean your clothes properly before packing. Make sure to get rid of stains or left over particles as they might damage your clothes. Dust collected on clothes can also result in insects spoiling your clothes.

Group your clothes. For instance, pack sweaters separately from pants. This will help you in finding the required item easily when it is needed. For storage use plastic containers but make sure to take care of the bugs in the container.

If you are choosing cardboard boxes, use new boxes free of stains and insects. Cardboard boxes attract bugs and hence pick an unused suitcase and clean it thoroughly.

If you are using mothballs, be careful and keep them away from the reach of children as they can be harmful for them. You can also use cedar blocks to keep away the insects. However, none of them ensures total protection against bugs.Fold your items and stack them properly.

Stack the heavy items on the bottom and the lightest at the top. Avoid hanging your sweaters or coats as hanging for long periods can make them misshaped. However if you still pan to hang your clothes, make use of extra hanging loops to prevent misshaping of clothes.

Make space for air to circulate. This prevents against moisture in the clothes. Make sure to avoid wrinkling and creasing of clothes during storage. Avoid plastic bags as they cut the air supply for the clothes.

Clean the area where you are planning to store your clothes. Store the clothes away from heating sources. If the place is dark, it will prevent fading of clothes and will keep them cool. Ensure that the storage area is dry to prevent against insects and bugs.

When you take them out again in the next winters, remember to hang the clothes in a steamy bathroom to freshen up them and get rid of wrinkles and creases that may have formed in storage. Brush your clothes with a soft cloth and use them again.
