Natural Methods of Family Planning

Natural methods are based on fertility awareness’ women learns when her fertile period starts and ends. Fertile period is the period when she can become pregnant.

There are four methods of family planning naturally. These are Calendar method, Cervical Secretion method, Basal body temperature method and feel the cervix method.

Calendar Method:A women can calculate her fertile period. It depends on the length of her menstrual cycles. If menses are regular, 14 days before next menses is the beginning of the fertile period which lasts for 3 days. Women should have no unprotected sex during this period.

As the sperms can live up to 72 hours, absistence has to be practiced 3 days before and three days after the period. In a cycle of 28 days, the fertile period is from 11-19th day of the menses.

She can have sex in the first 10 days and last 10 days. It has a failure rate of about 20%.When used correctly it can be effective up to 90%.To reduce the failure rate the male partner can use condom or practice “coitus Interruptus”during this period.

Cervical Secretion Method: Usually, very little vaginal secretions are seen or felt in a woman. With the beginning of the fertile period, these secretion increases. So the woman feels wet inside and the wetness continues until the fertile period lasts.

Once she starts feeling the wetness inside, she should not have unprotected sex after a week from that time. It has a high failure rate of 20%.It requires planning and resistant on the part of partners. But consistent and correct use can reduce the failure rate to 3%.

Basal Body Temperature Method:It is a little more sophisticated method. In this method, daily morning temperature is measured by the lady before getting up from the bed. When the fertile period starts, the temperature rises by 0.5 degrees centigrade.

The partners have to avoid sex for next 3 days after the temperature rise or use condom or coitus interruptus method before this time. It has also high failure rate of about 20%.But if used correctly, it can be reduced to 10%.

“Feel the Cervix” Method: Usually, cervix is firm and closed. But at the start of the fertile period, it becomes soft and open. A woman can feel the difference.Again; it becomes firm and closed after 3 days. During this period it is necessary to avoid sex and have sex only after the cervix becomes firm again.

Coitus Interruptus: It is a method by which partner withdraws his penis just before ejaculation and ejaculates outside. Some men do master this technique but failure rate is very high.
