Medication For Hair Loss
April 2, 2009
With nearly every third person suffering from the problem of hair loss, the medical and cosmetic stores are flooded with hair loss treatments and medication. It’s absolutely good news that there are so many products available, however the confusing part of it all is that you don’t really know what exactly will work in your case, as these treatments and medications show different effects on different people.
You can always go the hit and trial way, but it will be better that you find out the main reason for your hair loss problem before you get onto any kind of treatment. And that’s where taking advice from your doctor may be the most practical thing to do.
Some common medications
Most of the medications available in the market are supposed to make your hair re-grow on your scalp. While the basic purpose of all these medications is to stimulate hair growth, the results may vary from person to person depending on a lot many other factors.
Hair loss treatments are mainly of two types with the first one being in the form of pills or supplements that need to be taken orally and the second one is creams or ointments that need to be applied locally. Whichever method you choose, go specifically by what your doctor recommends or what is written on the package.
Pills and supplements haven’t been found to be really effective, especially in the case of women, and the other most important reason you need to stay away from these pills is that they can lead to some severe side effects.
As for externally usable medicines, Minoxidil suspension is the most popular and is easily available over the counter at most drugstores. And even though it is a nonprescription drug, it is always better to consult your doctor before trying it on. Its popularity indeed does hint at its effectiveness in helping the hair to re-grow.
The next category of medicines that you can look forward to is Corticosteroid based creams and ointments, as they have also been found helpful in certain cases.
The last bit
Although, there is no dearth of hair loss treatment products and medications available in the market, you must always check with your doctor to find out what is the best combination of products and medicines to be used in your particular case. And whatever course you follow you need to be regular about it and you should never stop or change the prescription on your own.
