Learn More On Stress Hormones
I have written about what are the primary factors that cause depression a few days ago. In my write-up, I have also discussed how a serious loss, some big changes and milestones that we come across in our lives can trigger depression. I present some more circumstances here that can cause depression.
Changes in the hormones
* Postpartum depression. The birth of a child brings a big change in your life and can cause severe depression.
* Menopause. It’s a very common cause. Some women take menopause to be a huge loss as they are unable to conceive after this stage. However, antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can help to lift spirits and minimize hot flashes during menopause.
Chronic stress factors
* Pain. Apart from physical uneasiness, pain may also trigger emotional distress. Antidepressants belonging to the category of serotonin and norephinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used to treat such pain while reducing depression at the same time.
* Illness. An illness like cancer that can overwhelm you or chronic illness such as diabetes can give rise to depression.
* Fatigue. Usually illness and pain accompanies fatigue. However, it can cause depression by itself too.
* Financial stress. Often physicians and therapists have a hard time dealing with it. Though support groups like Debtors Anonymous and some non-profit organizations are there to help you decrease your monthly payments and debts, ensure that they are not trying to take you for a ride and make profit.
* Abusive associations. A difficult one to deal with as severing a relationship in spite of the mistreatment may be extremely hard. Even when such relationships are harmful for your emotional and physical well-being, it’s not an easy task to walk out.
When there’s no reason
Though it may perhaps shock you but depression may also set in when no reason exists. This disease doesn’t always need a cause to rear its ugly head. However, lack of any reason doesn’t mean that you have no strength of character or that you should “buck up”.
I think highly of those men and women who were able to identify their depression and had shown the courage to ask for medical treatment.
