How Bad Beauty Product Can Be Harmful For Your Skin

Bad Beauty Product

Bad Beauty Product Are you concerned about your health as well as the health of your family? Do you purchase products that say “natural” or “organic” with the hope that they will be better for you than those that are chemically produced?

Sadly, many beauty products such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and even makeup contain ingredients which are known to be harmful to our health. Read the product labels carefully, you may find some toxic ingredients in your everyday household beauty products.

Oily Slick

Mineral oil is a crude oil derived from petroleum – you know, the stuff that’s leaking in the Gulf right now. This product finds its way into things like baby oil, lipstick, liquid foundation makeup, body lotions and even makeup removers. All petroleum based products, including petroleum and paraffin, clog pores and prevent the body from getting rid of its own toxins.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are often touted to be fantastic natural exfoliants and tools to moisturize the skin. However, this product is so effective at removing dead skin cells, that it also removes much of the skin’s natural protective layers, making the skin 50% more susceptible to UV rays. This can cause premature aging and possibly skin cancer.

Chemical Burn

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a chemical compound found in most commercially produced shampoos, toothpastes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. This heavy duty cleaner strips the skin of oils, drying it out, and combined with other chemicals, it can form carcinogenic compounds. This is often used because it produces lots of foam, giving users the illusion that they are clean because they form suds that wash away dirt, and grime.

Artificial Preservatives

Formaldehyde (formalin), that wonderful preservative that is used in vaccines, finds its way into our beauty products like nail polish, shampoos and skin creams. Besides causing allergic reactions when it comes into contact with the skin, inhalation of this chemical fume is linked to asthma and cancer.

More Oil

Alcohol or Isopropyl alcohol is another petroleum-based chemical. This slippery character can be found in hair spray, perfume, after shave, not to mention hair color product as well as anti-freeze and solvent. Used directly on the skin, it causes premature aging and drying and its fumes can cause nausea, headaches, dizziness and depression.

Lacquer, which is often added to mascara to make it waterproof, smudgeproof, and make lashes look fuller, causes one to actually lose their eyelashes with prolonged use.

Not so Smooth Move

Collagen, when produced by our bodies, keeps our skin healthy and elastic. The collagen added to cosmetic creams and other skin care products, however, comes from an animal source which only serves to clog pores as the protein within this manufactured collagen cannot be absorbed through the skin.

Lanolin is a fat which many apply to their bodies in hopes of returning the elasticity of youth. Unfortunately, this fat (which is obtained mostly from sheep wool) causes many irritations and rashes. Be careful what you buy in the health and beauty aisle. Don’t let slick advertising fool you. Read the label and you’ll be aware of what you’re wearing!
