Thus, steroid medications should not be used for longer periods. If itchy and flaky skin is due to eczema, coal tar treatment may be advised. Problem of itchy and flaky skin can also be controlled by making some changes in lifestyle.

Stress must be avoided at all costs, as it worsens the symptoms. By eating healthy diet also, this type of skin condition can be treated. Diet must contain food substances rich in vitamin B and zinc. Oily and deep-fried foods should be avoided. Over styling of hairs also lead to itchiness and thus, must be avoided. Excessive use of hair styling products also leads to buildup over scalp, which makes the skin itchy and flaky. Thus, use of such products should be reduced.

By rubbing mineral oil also, itchiness and flakiness of scalp can be controlled. Mineral oil should be rubbed at night before going to bed. After applying oil, head should be covered with shower cap. Mineral oil is very effective in easing scalp inflammation and in loosening the irritating scales. In the morning, hairs can be washed with shampoo, which removes loosened scales.

There are also some home remedies that are effective in treating itchy and flaky scalp. For example, apple cider vinegar treatment is one of them. First of all, hairs are washed with a mild and pH balanced shampoo. Since apple cider vinegar acts effectively on dandruff and irritating scales, use of anti-dandruff shampoo with this treatment may be avoided. For preparing the mixture, one cup of apple cider vinegar is mixed with half cup of water.

Few drops of essential oils like rosemary or lavender oil are added to this mixture for increasing the cleansing effect. Essential oils also provide natural fragrance to hairs. This mixture is applied directly on shampooed hairs. This mixture can also be sprayed on hairs with a sprayer. A gentle massage is then given to hairs with fingers. Best results are obtained when this mixture is not rinsed and allowed to become dry.

Some people having greatly irritated and inflamed scalp also use undiluted apple cider vinegar for getting relief. After leaving it on hairs and scalp for fifteen minutes, it is washed away with a mild and pH balanced shampoo. Lemon juice is also effective in treating and preventing itchiness and flakiness of scalp. Two teaspoons of lemon juice can be added to half cup of water and this mixture is then applied on hairs and scalp.

Gentle massage is given with fingers for two or three minutes and hairs are then rinsed with water. For maximum effect, lemon juice should be applied to shampooed hairs. Application of essential oils is also helpful in getting relief from itching. For application, mixture is prepared by mixing lavender, Eucalyptus and German Chamomile essential oils. This mixture is diluted and applied to affected areas. After leaving this mixture for fifteen to twenty minutes, hairs are rinsed with tepid water.

Fenugreek seeds are also helpful in treating itchy and flaky scalp. For application, two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds are soaked in water overnight. These seeds are grinded in morning so as to make a soft paste. This paste is applied to scalp and left for half an hour before rinsing with mild shampoo. For maximum effect, lime juice can be applied to hairs before last rinse. Tea tree oil can also be used for treating itchiness and flakiness of skin. Tea tree oil is first mixed with olive oil and then applied to hairs and scalp. Gentle massage is then given to hairs. For best results, this mixture should be left on scalp overnight.
