Bed head is a common term used for fly-away hairs and tangles that are normally found after waking up. In other words, bed head is resulted due to sleeping and it can be very annoying sometimes. There are many reasons due to which bed head occurs.
Severity of this condition increases with length of hairs. People with long hairs are easy prey to bed head. On the other hand, people with short hairs can easily tame this condition by wetting hairs or by combing. By following certain steps, bed head can avoided to a certain extent.
Steps for Preventing Bed Head
Bed head can be prevented in many ways. For example, by following some good bedtime hair grooming practices, these can be avoided. Before going to bed, hairs can be combed with a wide-tooth comb or a boar bristle brush. This helps in smoothing the hairs. If a person has dry hairs, this step must be followed for avoiding tangles. It also prevents hairs to become full of static.
Since dryness of hairs is one of major reasons for bed head, keeping hairs soft avoids bed head to a good extent. After washing hairs, leave-in conditioner should be applied to damp hairs. This type of conditioner is good for moisturizing hairs as well as for keeping the hairs weighed down. As a result, tangles are not formed while sleeping. Moisturized hairs are less likely to stick straight. In the same way, deep conditioners can also be applied after washing hairs.
These conditioners are easily available at cosmetic, drug and departmental stores. Deep conditioners are considered as one of best for keeping hairs smooth and moist. However, moderate quantities of leave-in or deep conditioners and serums should be used otherwise hairs can become greasy or lifeless. If thermal styling products are used for making new styles or managing hairs, using deep conditioner becomes necessary for avoiding bed head. This is because thermal styling causes dryness of hairs.
For preventing dryness of hairs, it is also recommended that hairs should not be washed frequently. Frequent washing removes moisturizing oils from hairs and make them more entwined. Even if frequent washing of hairs is to be done, mild or diluted shampoos should be used. In market, hair taming creams are also available. Small quantity of this cream can be rubbed and applied over hairs at bed time. These creams are very effective in preventing tangles and bed head. Before using these creams, it should be ensured that skin is not allergic to any of its ingredients.
By changing sleeping habits also, bed head can be avoided. For example, bed head are not reported with satin and silk pillowcase. This is because satin and silk are non-absorbent materials and thus, do not remove oil from hairs. On these pillow cases, hairs move across easily and thus, no tangles are formed. Oil is secreted by the scalp for keeping the hairs soft and moist. Other reason for using these pillowcases is that these do not promote friction, unlike polyester and cotton pillowcases.
For avoiding bed head, it is also necessary that hairs and scalp are kept cleaned. This is because greasy roots make hairs unmanageable and as a result, tangles form very frequently. With more messiness, chances of bed head increases. In case of long hairs, it is very necessary that hairs are tied at the crown of head or at the nape of neck. This helps in keeping the hairs smooth and in preventing tangles. After waking up in the morning, hairs should be untied and brushed or combed.
Some people sleep with aggressive turning and tossing moves in bed. This habit should be corrected as it also leads to bed head. Such people can also wind their hairs into a bun, as it helps in keeping hairs in place while sleeping. Due to any reason, if hairs have to be shampooed before going to bed, this must be done at least one hour before the bedtime. This is because hairs need time for getting dried up, especially if hairs are long.
Sleeping with damp hairs is not recommended at all, as this leads to severe tangles. After washing, hairs should be first dried with towel and then combed gently for removing any tangles. In case of severe tangles, hairs should be wetted with warm water and then blow-dried. This also helps in keeping tangles at bay. If it is not possible to wet or wash hairs, a hot wet washcloth can be used.
It should be rubbed in the direction hairs are required to lay. This also prevents bed head from occurring. It has been observed that on many occasions, people sleep on surfaces and objects other than bed. For example, many people enjoy sleeping on sofa. This practice also leads to bed head. This is because sofa is less comfortable and thus, turning and tossing increases while sleeping. This leads to tangles. Very often, cushion lying in sofa is made of rough material. This also leads to bed head. While sleeping on sofa, a silk pillow must be used.
Rough or vigorous combing of hairs is also one of many reasons for bed head, as it makes hairs more static. Thus, combing of hairs should be done very gently. A wide-tooth comb is generally recommended for combing. If comb is not running through the hairs smoothly, hairs can be wetted slightly. In no case, hairs should be left unkempt while sleeping.
By using bandana also, problem of bed head can be dealt to a certain extent. Silk bandanas are considered as better than cotton bandanas. Using bandana helps in keeping the hairs in place. In the morning, it can be removed.
One way to get rid of bed head instantly is to get a hair cut.
Tangles are generally not reported in short hairs. There are many short hair styles that are in vogue these days and even women can get these styles. Bed head is reported more in people having thick hairs. Thick hairs are difficult to manage. Such people should apply styling products after waking up in the morning for removing tangles.
