Every woman should educate herself about different types of birth control so that she can make a sensible and intelligent choice when the situation demands.

Hormonal Methods

You can use hormonal methods like birth control pills, shot, ring or implant to prevent your pregnancy. These hormonal methods contain progesterone and estrogen. Intake of these hormonal medications prevents the release of an egg from your ovaries, prevent sperm from entering the egg or prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. However, you should remember that these medications will not give you protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

Barrier Methods

Barrier methods are physical or chemical barriers that prevent sperm from entering into the uterus. Male condom, female condom, cervical cap, contraceptive sponge, spermicides, and diaphragm are some of the barrier methods used to prevent pregnancy.

A brief knowledge about these methods will help you to choose the best contraceptive method for yourself. The male condom prevents direct contact between the penis and vagina. The female condom protects the vaginal canal, cervix, and the area around vagina.

The cervical cap is composed of latex rubber and is inserted into the vagina to prevent pregnancy. Spermicides prevent pregnancy in a woman by killing sperms. They come as foaming tablets, jellies, creams or vaginal suppositories.

Fertility Awareness Method

Fertility awareness method does not use any devices to prevent pregnancy. If you want to choose this method then you need to abstain from sex for seven to ten days during your ovulation period. You can also choose to use any of the barrier methods discussed above during ovulation.

However, none of these methods are full proof or a hundred percent effective. If you really do not want to become pregnant then the safest way to prevent pregnancy is to abstain from sexual intercourse. This way you will be able to protect yourself from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

You should consider few things before choosing a contraceptive method such as its effectiveness, cost and degree of protection against pregnancy. Besides these factors, the most important thing you should take into consideration while choosing a contraceptive method is the time when you want to get pregnant as some contraceptive methods may spoil your pregnancy plans even after you stop using them.
