Dealing With Pregnancy Insomnia
Many women experience the problem of insomnia or sleeplessness when they are pregnant.
The many changes which happen in the body during pregnancy leads to this troublesome condition.
Proper sleep is very much required for both the mom and baby to be healthy.There are many strategies which one can adopt to combat pregnancy insomnia. The below mentioned are a few such methods.
A pregnant woman will experience many physical discomforts which will act as a hindrance in the way of getting a good night’s sleep. If you experience leg cramps at night, then you can sleep by keeping your legs in an elevated position with the help of pillows. This will relieve the leg muscles of soreness and pain.
Your sleep can also be disturbed due to problems like heart burn. To avoid this, stop having very spicy food items for dinner. Also sleep in an inclined position by elevating your head and back with pillows.
The position in which you sleep largely contributes to the problem of pregnancy insomnia. Always sleep on your left side with a pillow tucked in between your legs and with another pillow placed beneath your tummy.If backache troubles you, then you can support your back while sleeping by using huge maternity pillows.
You can also make changes in your diet so as to deal with the problem of sleeplessness. You should have foods which are rich in the neurotransmitter named serotonin. Serotonin will help in inducing healthy sleep patterns. For this purpose you can have food items like tofu, tuna and soy milk.
You can also have a warm bubble bath just before bedtime, in order to relax properly and have a good sleep.
Avoid drinking tea and caffeinated drinks toward the end of the day as they will act as stimulants for your body and mind and will keep you up and about throughout the night. You can substitute these drinks with a cup of chamomile tea or ginger tea as both of them have properties which will help you to relax and unwind.
Do have these drinks at least two hours before your usual bedtime, in order to avoid the tendency of frequent urination when you go to bed. You should also finish your dinner well before bedtime,so as to obtain an undisturbed sleep.
