Comfort foods that calm you down

January 28, 2010

When we are in stress and in a frenzy to complete the daily chores we often take resort tot the goodies meant for diet busting and these in turn do not soothe the nerves and make us feel bad. When we curl up on the sofa with a big bowl of ice cream it is quite sinful. This causes a sudden spurt in the sugar level and releases the stress hormones. You could also munch down the
whole can of potato wafers. Alcohol is a also a stimulant but the bad wolf in sheep’s attire.

However, real good foods to calm you down exist.

When you are suffering from too much pressure go for the berries. When your jaws are tightened with pressure try munching one of those frozen berries in your mouth. I bet you would not be able to stop at one and the carbohydrates in the berries gradually turn into sugar and you don’t
have the sudden spurt in blood sugar. Besides they are also a good source of Vitamin C which help to fight a spurt in cortisol the stress hormone.

If you are craving for some creamy food go for the avocados. These have the b Vitamins which help to release the stress and rejuvenates the brain cells and the nerves. The creaminess in them comes from the healthy fat content in them. You can scoop the cream up with chips and the crunching helps to relieve you off some tension.

Walnuts are great as comfort foods. These have the B Vitamins too and also zinc that cures anxiety. The walnuts help with a boost of the E Vitamins which benefits to lessen stress. So when you use the nutcracker to eat the walnuts with every crack some bit of tension is released. People who take 1000 miligrams of vitamin c have lower cortisol and lower blood pressure. You can lean back and start with an orange. The five minutes of break and eating an orange would help to keep the stress level lower.

A warm drink is a soother and the same goes for tea which is a great aromatic drink to relieve some stress and tension.

Asparagus is a good tension reliever and with every stalk you take a good source of folic acid which acts a as a mood lightener. A light asparagus soup would help.

Dark Chocolates with 70 per cent cocoa in them are mood lighteners and they have the ‘feel good’ quotient in them to relieve you of stress.Try these comfort foods from now on to have a hassle free day.
