Cold Winters And Your Skin
December 15, 2008
As winter pulls in, along come some beauty problems like dry and frizzy hair, chapped lips and a dry and itchy skin. Sure, all these things can be quite irritating and annoying, but with little care you can easily put a stop on these nuisances.
The cold winter breeze and the heating in your house can squeeze out the moisture from your skin leaving it parched and itchy. One golden rule is to always wash your face with warm or cold water, but never with hot water because hot water leads to further loss of moisture from the skin. You could even skip washing your face by opting for an alcohol free cream based cleanser.
You need lots of moisturizer to restore the moisture balance of your skin, settle for a moisturizer which boasts of containing collagen or lactic acid. The moisturizer is best applied after a shower that is when your skin is damp, to lock in the moisture. For the moisturizer to penetrate deep into your skin, your skin needs to be free of dirt and the layers of dead skin, blocking the pores. For this scrubbing your face at least once a week is recommended.
When your skin is excessively dry you will experience itching because of the bacteria hiding in the cracks developed on your skin due to dryness. Aloe Vera based lotions can have quite a soothing effect, while using creams containing antihistamines can also provide temporary relief.
Moving on to your hair, which again becomes dry and further leads to frizzes and split ends. And the best solution to this problem is using a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture and make your hair more manageable. Let the conditioner stand on your hair for a minimum of fifteen minutes before you wash it off, to allow deeper penetration into the hair shaft. Hot oil treatments along with steaming are the other two ways to moisturize your hair.
Cracked and chapped lips are not just unattractive but can be quite painful as well. And sadly, lipstick doesn’t help in concealing the cracks; rather it makes them more noticeable. Use a soft toothbrush and scrub your lips gently to remove the flakes and then apply a good lip balm. Keep the lip balm handy to apply additional coats as and when required. Look for a lip balm that is enriched with vitamin E or almond oil.
