Abnormal Bleeding during Menstruation
If you suffer from abnormal uterine bleeding, you will need to change pads or tampons frequently. When adolescents start menstruating, they may experience abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. Blood clots during menstruation are normal.
Usually menstrual blood clots are black, red or brown in color. These blood clots are a component of the endometrium or form a part of the uterus lining which is discarded during menstruation. However, excessive bleeding or clots during menstruation could be a reason of concern.
Women who are on the verge of menopause may also face the problem of excessive bleeding. Menstruation during this period is often heavy or irregular, based on the levels of hormones. Fibroid tumors are another common reason of abnormal uterine bleeding
Some other reasons of disproportionate bleeding that should be taken into consideration by your clinician consist of:
* Lupus
* cervical or endometrial polyps
* endometrial cancer
* pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
* cervical cancer
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) used by women for birth control may also give rise to excessive or prolonged periods. If you are using an IUD and face menorrhagia, consult your physician to get the IUD removed. You can get it replaced with some other alternative method of birth control.
Platelet disorders are another of the most common blood disorders that give rise to excessive or abnormal bleeding. Such a disorder is generally detected as soon as one starts menstruating. Von Willebrand’s disease is the most widespread platelet disorder.
Women who suffer from von Willebrand’s disease usually experience excessive menstrual bleeding. However, the suffering of these women doesn’t end here. They also bleed from the nose, get bruised easily and pass blood in the stool. So, whatever be the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding, it is wise to seek medical help and act according to your doctor’s advise.
