Our very survival depends on oxygen. In a healthy human being, the concentration of oxygen in the blood stream is around sixty to seventy percentage. When the oxygen levels of the body begin to diminish and drops to around sixty percent or below we begin to fall sick.
Although only 52 percent oxygen is required to sustain life, with such an extremely low level of oxygen in the blood we are closer to death than life.
The Importance of Oxygen for Human Survival
All of us are aware of the fundamental fact that oxygen is essential to sustain our life. The normal breathing process consists of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. But beyond this fundamental function, oxygen plays a far greater role for our overall well being and survival.
Most people are unaware of the fact that a mere ten percent of our nutritional energy comes from the food that we eat, while a massive ninety percent is provided by oxygen. The toxins which build up inside our body would reach dangerous levels, if not for oxygen which helps to burn up the excess toxins inside our bodies and keep our system healthy. The viruses, fungi and bacteria which attack our system ever so frequently are oxidized by oxygen.
Increasing Body Oxygen Levels
There are multiple ways of increasing oxygen levels of the body. Enhanced oxygen means greater ability to fight diseases, increased energy levels and the ability to live a full and healthy life. Any type of aerobic exercise like cycling, jumping, swimming and running can pump up the heart and make the lungs function at optimum levels. A minimum of thirty minutes of aerobic activity every single day can increase the body oxygen levels.
Improper breathing can reduce the body oxygen levels. Instead of shallow breathing, practice deep breathing wherein enough oxygen is drawn into the system through deep inhalation and the carbon dioxide is effectively eliminated from the system through deep exhalation. Proper deep breathing technique if practiced regularly can increase our body oxygen levels.
Another way to increase the body oxygen levels is to eat a diet that is rich in foods that supply oxygen. Most people appear incredulous when they hear that specific foods can increase the supply of oxygen. But that is just the case.
Foods That Supply Extra Oxygen
Cooking kills the natural oxygen that is present in the food. So try and eat plenty of raw foods in the form of salads and also avoid overcooking food. From green leafy vegetables to fruits there are a number of foods that can bring extra oxygen into the blood stream. Some of the common foods which should be incorporated into the diet to increase the body oxygen levels have been discussed in this article.
Green Leafy Vegetables
Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, if you want to increase oxygen supply into the system. The green color of the vegetables is due to the presence of chlorophyll. The atomic structure of chlorophyll almost matches the atomic structure of the blood. Hence eat plenty of green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale, and asparagus to increase the blood oxygen supply.
Eat plenty of iron rich vegetables to prevent anemia. Some of the vegetables which are high in iron include parsley, Swiss chard, turnip greens, water cress and collard greens to name a few. Make it a point to eat at least one to two servings of vegetables every day to increase the blood oxygen levels. Try to eat plenty of raw salads instead of cooked vegetables as they have higher levels of chlorophyll. Cooking vegtables kills the chlorophyll present in them.
Hemoglobin is the iron rich blood protein that is responsible for carrying oxygen to the vital organs of the body as well as to the tissues. When there is a deficiency in the blood hemoglobin levels it can result in anemia. Severe reduction in hemoglobin levels also means that enough oxygen is not being supplied to the vital organs of the body.
So in order to keep the hemoglobin levels of the blood normal and to increase the supply of oxygen, eat plenty of red meat. Red meats have high levels of heme iron. Heme iron also happens to be the most easily absorbable form of dietary iron. So eat plenty of red meat including organ meat like liver, and meat like beef and lamb.
To increase the supply of oxygen into the system, ensure that you eat plenty of seafood. Some of the seafoods which can increase the supply of oxygen into the system includes fatty fish like tuna and shell fish like clams, oysters and shrimp. If you have some allergic reaction to shellfish then substitute them for fish like tuna and salmon to increase the supply of oxygen.
Incorporating foods prepared from whole grains into the daily diet, can significantly increase the supply of oxygen in the system. Rice cereals, bran, millet, barley and oats are rich in iron and can raise the level of oxygen in the blood. Besides being rich in iron whole grains are also rich in B vitamins and proteins. This makes it an ideal food to increase the supply of oxygen in the body.
To increase the supply of oxygen in the blood, one must ideally have at least one serving of legumes every day. Legumes like whole grains contain abundant amounts of iron, B vitamins and proteins. Some of the legumes which one can eat to increase the supply of oxygen are peas, black eyed peas, chickpeas, kidney beans and black beans.
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts like walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts and cashew nuts are rich sources of iron. Seeds can also increase the supply of oxygen. Ideally eat sprouted seeds to increase the oxygen supply into the system. Sprouted seeds have higher levels of iron.
In short enhance your oxygen supply by making wise choices in the food that you eat. Instead of eating junk food or high fat food make an effort to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, fish and legumes and see the difference it has on your general health.
